Goodbye HAUNTER. Hello HAUNTER 2.0! And a Brewery-Pinball Roadtrip!

ON AUGUST 23, 2021, I traded in my 40th anniversary gray 2004 Mustang Convertible – HAUNTER – for a 2020 55th anniversary black Mustang Convertible. This was a difficult goodbye; the original HAUNTER has been with me 16.5 years — since before my son Shaun was born! Almost 1/3 of my life. I put 215,000 miles on that car and drove it to virtually every author event I’ve ever attended. It’s also in the background…

Six Months in Isolation… a Pinball Heaven

THIS WEEK I RECEIVED the Advance Reading Copy of my 12th novel, Voodoo Heart, my next book from Flame Tree Press (it will be released on October 20). I also set a new personal high score on Mata Hari, a pinball machine that I’ve played since I was 17 years old. And I was a guest on Glenn Rolfe’s Horror Shop YouTube show. So… it’s been a great week! I was thinking that it’s been…

The Joy of Isolation

LAST NIGHT, I POSTED this video on my Instagram story – because it was really a perfect Friday night at home! I played a little music on the keyboard & guitar and then spent a couple hours on my pinball machines. Had Material Issue’s best CD Destination Universe on the stereo, a Revolution Anti-Hero IPA in my pinball machine cup holder, and ultimately set my 2nd best high score on the Sorcerer machine (#3 on…

Pinball Expo 2019: All About Elvira!

I HAVE TO ADMIT that before I played it, I was a little skeptical about the latest Elvira-themed pinball machine that debuted this weekend at Pinball Expo 2019. I’m a big fan of the previous Elvira tables, Elvira and the Party Monsters (1989) and Scared Stiff (1996), both designed by Dennis Nordman and released through Midway/Bally. The new table, Elvira’s House of Horrors , from Stern Pinball, was also designed by Nordman, and served as…

Pinball at the Zoo ’19

IT’S BECOME A TRADITION that we look forward to for months. Every April, Shaun and I drive up to the Expo Center in Kalamazoo, Michigan for the annual “Pinball at the Zoo” pinball show. We go up on Friday, play the silver ball that night and all day/night Saturday, and head home bleary-eyed but satisfied on Sunday morning. We hang out with our friends Brad Czernik and his boys, Levi and Christian, as well as…

On Turning 53

I TURNED 53 just over a week ago. Not sure how that happened. Seems like I was just 35. I had to be away from home this year — I had a four-day business trip to Las Vegas that meant I was working for 12 hours on “the day.” I’m not a gambler, so I’m not a big Vegas fan, but I did manage to make the most of the small amount of free time…

Pinball at the ‘Zoo 2018

IT HAS BECOME one of those annual events that the Everson house looks forward to throughout the year. My friend Brad introduced Shaun and me to Pinball at the ‘Zoo, an April gathering of pinball enthusiasts at the Kalamazoo Expo Center. This year, I drove Shaun, Brad, and his son Levi up last Friday night, so that we could start Pinball at the ‘Zoo bright and early Saturday morning. On Friday and Saturday nights, we…

One crazy week… anchored by a Meteor

SO LAST WEEKEND, I got home late Saturday night from a work trip to Vegas. But I didn’t stay put for long. After a one-day rest, on Monday, I rented an SUV and drove four hours to Ann Arbor, Michigan. The reason? Meteor. Meteor is a pinball table that I’ve been looking to add to my basement mini-arcade for the past couple years. There were a lot of them produced back in 1979 by Bally…

Pinball at the ‘Zoo… 2

WHAT AN AWESOME WEEKEND weekend! Shaun and I drove 3 hours up to Kalamazoo, Michigan on Friday to hang at the Pinball At The ‘Zoo convention. My friend Brad Czernik had talked about the con for years to me, and so Shaun and I went last year for a day… but this year was even better, because Shaun was a little older and we stayed a little longer. We started our time in Kalamazoo Friday…
